How to make a US passport photo

1

1

Take the photo against a white wall

Plain white or off-white, in even light, facing the camera with a neutral expression and no glasses. It's easier if someone else takes it.

2

2

Drop it here and keep your background

The card opens on the US passport size. Switch off Plain background so your real wall stays: replaced backgrounds aren't accepted.

3

3

Check and save

Adjust the head size if needed, tap Save photo, and print it at 2 × 2 inches or use the digital copy for a visa form.

The State Department's photo rules

A US passport photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The head, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm). The background must be plain white or off-white without shadows, the photo must be in colour and taken in the last six months, and glasses aren't allowed except with a signed medical statement.

The State Department says not to change your photo with software, filters or AI, and it offers its own tool for cropping. This card does the cropping part: it finds your face, sizes the head to the rule and centres it, and with Plain background switched off it keeps your background as it is. Whether to submit the photo is your decision; we can't promise any office will accept it.

For a visa, the DS-160 form takes a square digital photo of 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, up to 240 KB. The card saves 600 × 600 pixels and keeps the file under 240 KB, all in your browser. A Diversity Visa entry needs exactly 600 × 600 pixels, also up to 240 KB.

What you can do

  • 2 × 2 inch passport, visa and Green Card sizes
  • Head sized to 1 to 1 3/8 inches, chin to crown
  • Your own background kept with Plain background off
  • A 600 × 600 pixel photo under 240 KB for the DS-160
  • Warnings for a tilted or turned head

US Passport Photo Maker (2 × 2 in): FAQ

01

Can I make my US passport photo at home?

You can take it at home and frame it here, but the rules are strict: a plain white or off-white background, no shadows, no glasses, a neutral expression and no edits beyond cropping. We can't promise it will be accepted; the State Department decides.

02

How do I print a 2 × 2 photo?

Yes. The JPEG carries the document's size and print resolution, so print it at actual size, not scaled to fit the page, on photo paper.

03

Why switch off Plain background?

The State Department rejects photos whose background was replaced or edited. With the switch off, the card only frames and sizes your photo.

04

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The face is found and the photo is made in your browser.
