How to Convert JPG to WebP

1

1

Drop your JPG photos

Drag the photos onto the box above, or click Choose Files. A batch is fine, and the request to turn them into WebP is already filled in.

2

2

Compare, then pick WebP

The assistant opens with your photos and shows WebP beside the other formats, each with an estimated size for your files. Tap WebP to convert them all.

3

3

Download the WebP files

Every photo comes back as a WebP file with its own download button. Your JPG files are left exactly as they were.

Why Websites Use WebP

WebP usually stores a photo in noticeably less space than JPG for a similar look, so pages built with it load faster and use less mobile data. Current versions of the major browsers display WebP, and many website builders and online shops accept it.

Both formats compress the picture, so turning a JPG into WebP compresses it a second time. The conversion uses a high quality by default to keep that hard to see, and you can ask for any quality from 1 to 100. A JPG that was already saved at a low quality may not get smaller, so check the sizes before you replace your originals.

The WebP file is written by your browser's own encoder, on your device, and leaves out hidden details such as the location. WebP is offered only when your browser can write a real WebP file; otherwise choose JPG or PNG.

  • WebP copies of your JPG photos
  • An estimated size for each photo first
  • A whole batch in one go
  • A quality setting from 1 to 100
  • Free, with no sign-up and no watermark

JPG to WebP: Questions and Answers

01

Will WebP images open everywhere?

Web browsers and most current apps open them. Some older programs, email clients and upload forms still want JPG, so keep your original photos for those.

02

Does turning a JPG into WebP lower the quality?

Slightly, because the photo is compressed again. At the default high quality the change is very hard to see, and you can ask for a higher quality if a picture needs it.

03

What if my browser does not offer WebP?

The converter checks your browser's encoder before offering WebP. If it cannot write that format, choose JPG or PNG, or try another browser. A differently encoded file is never renamed to pretend it is WebP.

04

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. It works in a modern web browser on a computer or a phone, with no account to create, nothing to install and no watermark on the result.

05

Does it change the file I drop?

No. Every result is saved as a new file, and the file you dropped stays exactly as it was.
