Why Videos Bounce Off Email

At the time of writing (September 2026), personal Gmail accounts can send 25 MB of attachments and Outlook.com allows 25 MB per attachment; Gmail swaps anything bigger for a Google Drive link. Work and school accounts may have lower or higher limits set by an administrator.

This page presets a target of 18 MB rather than 25. Email carries attachments in an encoded form that is larger than the file itself, the message text counts toward the total, and video encoders can land a little above their target. 18 MB leaves room for all three.

Nothing leaves your computer while you do it: the video is compressed in your browser and saved back to your device, ready to attach. If a long video still will not fit, trim it or split it into parts and send them separately.

Compress Video for Email: FAQ

01

What is the attachment limit for Gmail and Outlook?

At the time of writing (September 2026), 25 MB for personal Gmail accounts and 25 MB per attachment on Outlook.com. Gmail replaces larger attachments with a Google Drive link. Work and school accounts are set by their administrator.

02

Why aim for 18 MB when the limit is 25 MB?

Email encodes attachments for sending, which makes them larger than the file on disk, and the rest of the message counts toward the limit. The size box also counts binary megabytes, and encoders can overshoot slightly. 18 MB leaves comfortable headroom.

03

What if my video still will not fit?

A long video may need a bitrate too low to look good, and the sound keeps its original bitrate. Cut out the parts you do not need, or split the video into pieces and send them in separate emails.

04

Does compressing change the file format?

No. The video keeps its container, so an MP4 comes out as an MP4 and a MOV as a MOV.

05

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is compressed in your browser with WebCodecs, or with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly for files the browser cannot handle itself. It stays on your device the whole time, and there is no account and no watermark.
