How to Convert WebP to PNG

1

1

Drop the WebP files

Drag the WebP images onto the box above, or click Choose Files. You can select or drop several at once, and the request to turn them into PNG is already typed in.

2

2

Check the PNG size

The assistant opens with your images and lists PNG with the other formats, each with the size it would give your files. A PNG that would come out larger is marked as such before you tap it.

3

Save the PNG copies

Every image comes back as its own PNG, ready to download. The WebP files you dropped are not changed.

Why Save a WebP as a PNG

Websites like WebP because it loads quickly, so a logo, a sticker or a screenshot you save from a page is often a WebP file. Many image editors, office programs and design tools still work best with PNG, and some will not open WebP at all.

PNG suits graphics with see-through backgrounds, sharp lines and text: transparency carries over from the WebP, and every pixel is stored without another round of compression. The conversion keeps the picture exactly as the WebP shows it; it cannot add back detail the WebP left out.

Expect a bigger file. PNG stores far more data than WebP, above all for photographs, which is why each size is worked out before you convert. Every image is read and written as a PNG inside your browser, and hidden details such as where a picture was taken are not copied over.

  • PNG copies of WebP images, transparency included
  • The size each copy will have, shown before converting

WebP to PNG: Questions and Answers

01

Does the transparent background stay?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, so whatever is see-through in the WebP is see-through in the PNG too.

02

Why is the PNG so much larger than the WebP?

WebP throws away detail you are unlikely to notice to keep files small, while PNG keeps every pixel. A larger PNG is normal, especially for photos; if you need a light file that opens almost anywhere, choose JPG instead.

03

What happens to an animated WebP?

The PNG holds one still frame of it, not the animation: a PNG cannot move.

04

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. It works in a modern web browser on a computer or a phone, with no account to create, nothing to install and no watermark on the result.

05

Does it change the file I drop?

No. Every result is saved as a new file, and the file you dropped stays exactly as it was.
