Discord's Upload Limit

At the time of writing (September 2026), Discord lets accounts without Nitro upload files up to 20 MB; the limit rose from 10 MB on 13 August 2026. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB.

The preset is 18 MB. The size box counts binary megabytes, so 18 is about 18.9 million bytes, and the extra margin covers an encoder landing slightly above its target. With Nitro, raise the number to match your plan and keep a similar margin.

Game clips are often 1080p or 1440p at 60 fps with a high bitrate. Fit to Size keeps the resolution and lowers the bitrate, so short clips come out best (60 fps is kept when your browser can decode the clip directly; files that need the fallback engine are capped at 30 fps): at 18 MB a 30-second clip gets about 5 Mbit/s, while a two-minute clip gets about 1.2 Mbit/s.

Compress Video for Discord: FAQ

01

What is Discord's upload limit without Nitro?

At the time of writing (September 2026), 20 MB per file, up from 10 MB on 13 August 2026. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. Discord now measures the file before its own compression on mobile too, as it already did on desktop, so the size of the file you pick is what counts.

02

Why 18 MB and not 20 MB?

The size box counts binary megabytes, so 20 in the box would be about 21 million bytes, and encoders can overshoot their target slightly. 18 keeps the finished clip under the limit.

03

My clip is still too big or looks blocky. What now?

Long clips have to share the same 18 MB across more seconds, and the sound keeps its original bitrate. Cut the clip down to the moment that matters and compress again.

04

Is my clip uploaded to MediaConverter?

No. The video is compressed in your browser with WebCodecs, or with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly for files the browser cannot handle itself. It stays on your device the whole time, and there is no account and no watermark.
