M4A (AAC) is Apple's native audio format and the one iTunes and Apple Music prefer for imported songs and ringtones. Converting MP3 to M4A produces a file that syncs cleanly to iPhone, keeps its artwork tags and can be turned into an .m4r ringtone.
AAC is more efficient than MP3, so you can pick a lower bitrate for a smaller file with comparable quality. The conversion is done in your browser without uploading your music.
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III): MP3 is the universal lossy audio format. It plays on every device made in the last twenty-five years and offers small files with good quality at 192 to 320 kbps. It is best for music players, podcasts, phones and sharing.
M4A (MPEG-4 Audio): M4A is audio-only MP4, normally holding AAC (or lossless ALAC). It is the native format of iTunes, Apple Music and iPhone Voice Memos and sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. It is best for Apple devices, iTunes and voice memos.
