Why Convert MP4 to M4A?

M4A is simply the audio half of the MP4 family, so MP4 to M4A conversion is the most efficient way to extract sound from a video for Apple devices. The AAC stream can be kept at its original quality and the resulting file drops straight into Apple Music, iTunes, Voice Memos or GarageBand.

Compared with MP3, M4A/AAC delivers better fidelity at the same bitrate and supports proper metadata such as title, artist and album, which you can edit before converting.

  • Private by design: your MP4 file is converted on your own device and never uploaded.
  • M4A preselected: the output format is already chosen, so it is a one-click conversion.
  • Batch friendly: convert several MP4 files in one go and download them as a ZIP.
  • No limits, no watermark: free for files of any size, with nothing stamped on the output.

MP4 vs M4A

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14): MP4 is the most widely supported video container in the world. It usually carries H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, plays on every phone, browser, TV and editing app, and is the safest choice for sharing. It is best for sharing, social media, web playback and mobile devices.

M4A (MPEG-4 Audio): M4A is audio-only MP4, normally holding AAC (or lossless ALAC). It is the native format of iTunes, Apple Music and iPhone Voice Memos and sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. It is best for Apple devices, iTunes and voice memos.

In short: keep MP4 when the priority is sharing, social media, web playback and mobile devices, and switch to M4A when the file is headed for Apple devices, iTunes and voice memos. Need a different target? The full Video Converter supports every format listed below.

MP4 to M4A FAQ

01

Is M4A better than MP3 for extracted video audio?

Usually yes. The MP4's audio is almost always AAC already, so M4A can keep it without a second lossy encode, whereas MP3 always re-encodes. Choose MP3 only when you need the widest possible device compatibility.

02

Can I turn the extracted audio into an iPhone ringtone?

Convert to M4A, trim it to under 40 seconds with our cutter, then rename the extension to .m4r and add it through Finder or iTunes.

03

Is this MP4 to M4A converter free?

Yes. Converting MP4 to M4A on MediaConverter.io is completely free, with no watermark, no sign-up and no daily conversion limit.

04

Are my MP4 files uploaded to a server?

No. The converter runs inside your browser using WebAssembly and WebCodecs, so your .mp4 file is read and converted on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, which keeps private recordings private and means there is no waiting in an upload queue.

05

Is there a file size limit for MP4 to M4A?

No fixed limit. Because processing happens locally, the practical limit is your computer's memory and patience; multi-gigabyte MP4 files convert fine on a desktop browser. Very large files take longer on phones.

06

Will converting MP4 to M4A reduce quality?

M4A is a lossy format, so the MP4 audio is decoded and re-encoded. Keep the bitrate at 100% (or pick 256 to 320 kbps) and the difference is inaudible for almost all listeners.

07

Which browsers support the MP4 to M4A converter?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop all work. Chrome and Edge are fastest because they expose hardware-accelerated WebCodecs decoders.
