Convert
1
Drag and drop your .m4a file onto the page or click to browse. You can select several M4A files at once to batch-convert them.
2
The output format is already set to WAV, so you can convert immediately. If you need to, adjust the audio codec, bitrate or sample rate in the settings panel first.
3
Click Convert. The WAV file is processed on your own device; nothing is uploaded to a server. When it finishes, click Download to save it (or Download all to get a batch as a ZIP).
iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports and Zoom recordings often arrive as M4A, but audio editors, transcription services and phone systems prefer WAV. Converting M4A to WAV gives you a plain PCM file that opens instantly in Audacity, Pro Tools, Logic and Descript.
The converter decodes AAC or ALAC in your browser with no upload, which is useful when the recording is a confidential interview or meeting, and lets you set the sample rate.
M4A (MPEG-4 Audio): M4A is audio-only MP4, normally holding AAC (or lossless ALAC). It is the native format of iTunes, Apple Music and iPhone Voice Memos and sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. It is best for Apple devices, iTunes and voice memos.
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format): WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio exactly as it was recorded. It is the standard for audio editing, mastering and archiving, at the cost of large files (about 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo). It is best for editing, mastering, DAWs and archiving.
In short: keep M4A when the priority is Apple devices, iTunes and voice memos, and switch to WAV when the file is headed for editing, mastering, DAWs and archiving. Need a different target? The full Audio Converter supports every format listed below.
