How to Convert AAC to WAV Online

1

1

Drop your AAC file

Drag and drop your .aac file onto the box above, or click Choose Files. The request is already filled in: “Convert this to WAV”.

2

2

Say how, if you want

The AI assistant uses sensible defaults. To choose the sample rate yourself, say so in the request, for example “Convert this to WAV at 48 kHz”.

3

3

Save your WAV file

The assistant opens with your file and converts it on your own device; the file itself is never uploaded. When the WAV file is ready, click Save. Prefer to set everything by hand, or batch-convert several files into a ZIP? The classic converter is one click away on this page.

Why Convert AAC to WAV?

Bare .aac files, the ADTS streams saved by stream recorders, some call and voice recorders and HLS audio captures, lack the MP4 wrapper most software looks for; Audacity, for instance, only opens AAC once its optional FFmpeg library is installed. Converting AAC to WAV gives you plain PCM that every editor, sampler and transcription service accepts.

The WAV holds what the AAC decoder produces with no further loss, but it cannot restore detail the AAC encoder removed. Expect about ten times the size: a 128 kbps AAC uses roughly 1 MB per minute, a 44.1 kHz stereo WAV about 10 MB.

  • Private by design: your AAC file is converted on your own device and never uploaded.
  • WAV already asked for: the AI assistant's request says WAV, so one drop does it. Want a particular sample rate? Just say so.
  • Batch friendly: the classic converter on this page takes several AAC files in one go and downloads them as a ZIP.
  • Free, no watermark: no sign-up, and nothing stamped on the output.

AAC vs WAV

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding): AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the successor to MP3 and the codec behind M4A, YouTube and most streaming services. A raw .aac file is an AAC stream without an MP4 wrapper. It is best for streaming, YouTube and modern devices.

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format): WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio exactly as it was recorded. It is the standard for audio editing, mastering and archiving, at the cost of large files (about 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo). It is best for editing, mastering, DAWs and archiving.

In short: keep AAC when the priority is streaming, YouTube and modern devices, and switch to WAV when the file is headed for editing, mastering, DAWs and archiving. Need a different target? The full Audio Converter supports every format listed below.

AAC to WAV FAQ

01

Why does my AAC file show the wrong length or refuse to seek?

A raw AAC stream has no duration index, so players estimate its length and seek approximately. The WAV records its exact length in the header, so it shows the right duration and seeks precisely.

02

Does it handle HE-AAC from internet radio?

Yes. HE-AAC (AAC+), common in internet radio and DAB+ recordings, is decoded by FFmpeg in your browser like standard AAC.

03

Is this AAC to WAV converter free?

Yes. Converting AAC to WAV on MediaConverter.io is free, with no watermark and no sign-up. The AI assistant runs on a free daily allowance of assistant credits; the classic converter on this page has no daily limit at all.

04

Are my AAC files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so your .aac file is read and converted on your own device and never uploaded, which keeps private recordings private and means there is no waiting in an upload queue. The AI assistant only sees what you type and basic facts about the file: its name, format, duration and size.

05

Is there a file size limit for AAC to WAV?

There is no plan or account limit, but the converter loads the whole AAC file into your browser's memory, so about 2 GB per file is the practical ceiling; larger files may fail to open. Long or high-resolution files also take longer, especially on phones.

06

Can I choose the WAV settings myself?

Yes. Ask the AI assistant for a sample rate in your request. Audio track selection and every other setting are in the classic converter, one click away on this page.

07

Will converting AAC to WAV reduce quality?

WAV is uncompressed, so no further compression loss is added to the audio decoded from your AAC file. The converter writes 16-bit WAV, CD resolution, so a 24-bit source is reduced to 16-bit.

08

Which browsers support the AAC to WAV converter?

It is built and tested on current desktop Chrome and Edge. The conversion itself runs in WebAssembly, which every current desktop browser supports, so speed depends mostly on your computer's processor.
